Art for private collectors by Isabelle Scheltjens

A work of art that earns its place on a wall does something specific. It holds the room. It changes the quality of the space around it. It is the thing your eye returns to, week after week, year after year, and finds something new.

Original glass art by Isabelle Scheltjens does all of that, and it does it through a technique so singular and so unique.

Isabelle Scheltjens is the only artist who produces photorealistic glass fusing portraits at this scale and to this standard. Each work is built from thousands of individually positioned glass fragments, fired at 800 degrees Celsius into a surface that holds its colour, its depth and its authority for as long as the glass endures. Every piece of glass is laid in a different place what makes her art unique.

What you see when you stand in front of her work

The experience of encountering a glass fusing portrait by Isabelle Scheltjens for the first time is unlike anything else in contemporary art. Up close, the surface is a dense, luminous field of individually positioned glass fragments, each one carrying its own colour and its own weight of light. The detail is extraordinary and the craftsmanship is immediately apparent. Then you step back, and a face emerges from that complexity with photorealistic precision. The transition is not gradual. It arrives all at once, and it is unforgettable.

In a private home, that quality takes on a particular significance. The work reads differently at different hours of the day, as the light in the room shifts from morning to evening. It rewards sustained attention and repays every viewing.

For collectors who buy original art because they intend to live with it, that sustained presence is the most important quality a work can have.

Plume fatale

A technique that took a decade to master

Isabelle Scheltjens developed her glass fusing method over more than a decade in her studio in Belgium. It has never been shared, never been taught and never been replicated. Before a single fragment is placed, she conducts an intensive study of the photographic reference, analysing the light, the shadow, the colour temperature and the emotional quality of the expression entirely by hand and by eye.

Every composition takes shape through thousands of handcrafted glass mosaic fragments and more. Each piece is fired above 800 degrees Celsius in the oven first, fusing together into a single surface. Isabelle Scheltjens then arranges the fused pieces by hand onto acrylic glass, creating a work with exceptional depth and detail.

In the collections of those who understand value

The collectors who have chosen to buy original art by Isabelle Scheltjens include Kevin De Bruyne, Gordon Ramsay and Lotus Bakeries. Her work has been presented by leading galleries in New York, Paris, London, Monaco, Dubai, Hong Kong and South Africa. That provenance is part of every work she makes, and it is part of what every collector acquires alongside it.

Glass fusing portraits and marble and bronze sculptures by Isabelle Scheltjens

The collection available to buy spans two disciplines. The glass fusing wall art portraits are the work for which Isabelle Scheltjens is internationally recognised, and they form the heart of every major collection that includes her name. After a decade of mastering that discipline, she extended her practice into three dimensions with a series of sculptures in marble and bronze that carry the same obsession with faces, light and perception.

The marble sculptures are carved and finished by hand in white and black marble, each one a portrait rendered with the precision and emotional intensity that defines her glass work. The bronze sculptures bring that same quality into cast form. Both disciplines are available for private purchase, and custom works can be arranged for collectors who wish to acquire a portrait made specifically for their home.
