Wall Art by Isabelle Scheltjens
Belgian artist Isabelle Scheltjens makes glass fusing wall art that does something no other medium achieves: it builds a photorealistic portrait from tens of thousands of individual glass fragments, each placed by hand, that only resolves into a face when you step away from it. Up close, the surface is an abstract field of colour and light. At distance, a face appears with an expressiveness that photographs cannot fully capture.
She is the only artist in the world who works this way at this scale. The technique is entirely hers, developed over more than a decade in her studio in Belgium.
How glass fusing wall art is made
Each work begins with a photographic reference that Isabelle Scheltjens studies intensively before a single fragment is cut. The glass is selected for colour, translucency and the role each piece will play within complex compositions built on bold colour combinations. On average a portrait contains 25,000 fragments and more, with some works reaching up to 80,000 fragments and more, arranged across two to three layers.
The fragments are cut first, then fired in the oven at 800 degrees Celsius, where they fuse together into a single unified surface. Only once this fusing is complete does Isabelle Scheltjens position and adhere the fused pieces onto acrylic glass to build the finished portrait. The colour becomes embedded in the material permanently, holding its depth and clarity for decades. This lasting quality is why collectors and high-end galleries across Europe, the Middle East and Asia choose her glass fusing wall art for spaces that are built to last.
